PATERSON — The Paterson Municipal Utilities Authority's Great Falls Summer Jazz series will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Overlook Park.

"This is not just for Patersonians. This is a free event for everyone who would like to come experience great music in the backdrop of the crown jewel of the city of Paterson," said Eric Lowe, chairman of the Municipal Utilities Authority.

The event will be the start of the a five-concert series that will take place each Saturday at Overlook Park leading up to the Great Falls Festival on the weekend of Sept. 2. Each concert is free and will feature food and beverage venders, as well as Great Falls Summer Jazz series memorabilia.

"Hopefully, this series will become a long-standing tradition," said Lowe, who proposed the idea to Mayor Jeffery Jones.

Each event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Live entertainment for the series will be:

* Saturday: The local jazz artist Mel Davis.

* Aug. 6: The local jazz group Body and Soul and the Latin jazz quartet Caleb Rumley.

* Aug. 13: The local jazz group Conspiracy for Positivity.

* Aug. 20: The local jazz artist Charles Jones and The Dalton Gang jazz group.

* Aug. 27: The local jazz artist Malcolm Cobb.

The Paterson Municipal Utilities Authority, an autonomous agency, is able to fund the event during a time of financial restraint for the city.

"The city took a huge financial hit — there's no question about it — but we are in a somewhat better position to fund these sorts of activities for the public," explained Lowe, who said that police officers and DPW workers at the event will be paid by the authority.
